Journey to the Heart of Ancient Sri Lanka

Dambana is a village within the Badulla District in Uva Province, Sri Lanka, known as the refuge of the indigenous Vedda people as well as their moribund Vedda language . The ancestors of modern Veddas were probably the earliest inhabitants of Sri Lanka whose arrival is dated tentatively to about 40,000–35,000 years ago . This enclave stands as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, where the authentic lifestyle of the ancient world thrives amidst the encroaching modernity, with only approximately 350 families remaining . The Vedda people have their own language known as Vedda, which is considered one of the few remaining indigenous languages in Sri Lanka, and they historically lived in harmony with the natural environment, relying on hunting, gathering, and some forms of subsistence agriculture .
