Journey to the Heart of Ancient Sri Lanka
Dambana is a village within the Badulla District in Uva Province, Sri Lanka, known as the refuge of the indigenous Vedda people as well as their moribund Vedda language . The ancestors of modern Veddas were probably the earliest inhabitants of Sri Lanka whose arrival is dated tentatively to about 40,000–35,000 years ago . This enclave stands as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, where the authentic lifestyle of the ancient world thrives amidst the encroaching modernity, with only approximately 350 families remaining . The Vedda people have their own language known as Vedda, which is considered one of the few remaining indigenous languages in Sri Lanka, and they historically lived in harmony with the natural environment, relying on hunting, gathering, and some forms of subsistence agriculture .
The Dambana Vedda Experience
The Veddhas, meaning "people of the forest," are essentially hunter gatherer forest dwellers without much change in their lifestyle from Stone Age to modern times, with the language used being an ancient dialect of Sinhala . Trek through the jungle and see how they hunt using bows and arrows, harvest bees honey from live honeycombs and indulge in fishing using pounded poison tree barks and plants . From age-old hunting techniques and traditional medicinal practices to deeply rooted spiritual beliefs and cultural rituals, each facet of Vedda life unveils a world untouched by the passage of time .
Per person for single day cultural immersion including village tour, Vedda Museum visit, cultural performance, and traditional meal. Multi-day camping experiences (1-3 nights) with extended jungle trekking and authentic Vedda homestay available on request with customized pricing.
