Gateway to the Misty Mountains
Corbet's Gap in Knuckle's Range deserves to be called Sri Lanka's most scenic mountain pass at an elevation of 1,218m (4,000 feet), crossed by the Hunnasgiriya-Meemure road which can claim to be the island's most scenic mountain road . This deep valley is also a rain shadow area where vegetation varies between wet, dry and montane types . Named after British surveyor Corbet who mapped the area in the second half of the 19th century, locals call it "Attala-Wettuwa" . Corbet's Gap is notorious for gusty winds and uncertain weather that can change within minutes from sunshine to fog and rain .
The Corbet's Gap Experience
Corbet's Gap has magnificent panoramic views in two directions: to the north is Meemure valley with Lakegala mountain in the background and the Five Knuckles peaks visible 5km away; to the southwest, views extend to Hasalaka Oya valley with Gurulupotha mountain beyond . These montane cloud forests at 3,000 ft above sea level are home to extraordinary flora and fauna, including endangered species like the western purple-faced langur and Sri Lankan leopard . The rugged terrain is almost always cloaked with thick spectral fog that hangs low around peaks year-round .
