Essential details for planning your trip
Best Time to Trek
January to April and July to September offer optimal conditions with clear skies, minimal rainfall, and excellent visibility for summit views. Avoid monsoon season (May-June, October-November).
Climate & Weather
Tropical highland climate with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 28°C. Summit can be cooler and windy. Morning mist common, clearing by mid-morning for spectacular views.
Difficulty Level
Moderate to challenging. 6km total distance with steep sections and rock scrambling at summit (the famous "Sinha Kata" or Lion Rock). Requires reasonable fitness level. Final ascent uses rope assistance.
Trek Duration
2-4 hours to summit, 1.5-2 hours descent for day trek. Multi-day camping options include overnight summit camping or forest base camp with extended exploration.
Access & Transportation
25km from Kandy city. Unique train access via Ihalakotte Railway Station on scenic Colombo-Kandy line. Road access via Poththapitiya. We provide all transportation from Kandy.
Safety & Preparation
Wear proper hiking boots with grip. Bring 2-3 liters of water (no sources on trail). Leech protection needed in wet season. Follow guide instructions on rocky sections. Mobile signal available on most of trail.
